2004 Robert D. Sawyer Award - Joe Carr

This year presenting the Robert D. Sawyer Distinguished Service Award was a bittersweet affair.  This spring, the first executive director of the Association, Bob Sawyer, passed away after a brief illness.  Bob Sawyer spent his life as a loyal CFA member, who selflessly contributed his time and effort to the foundation industry, and to creating its voice – the Concrete Foundations Association.

The Bob Sawyer Award is presented to a CFA member who volunteers his/her time and resources to serve the industry, much like Bob Sawyer did in his lifetime.  This year’s recipient, Joe Carr, president of Custom Concrete Inc., is such an individual.

Joe Carr has devoted a great deal of time and energy to the Association. He was president from 1993 to 1995, and under his leadership it was determined what the CFA was and what the Association wanted to become – a voice and authority for the poured wall industry.  It has been ten years since Joe Carr was president, but his leadership then, continues to benefit the CFA today.  It continues to grow as an international organization, and member participation is at an all time high.  With CFA’s ACI participation, the formation of the Education and Research Foundation, publication of the CFA Standard, and the development of the Concrete Home Council, the Association has truly become the authority on poured walls.

Carr has also given more than just his time as a CFA officer.  He and his entire family have actively supported the Association.  His willingness to help and give other members advice is legendary.

“I’ll never forget the first time I visited his company in the early ‘90’s,” states Barry Herbert of Herbert Construction in Marietta, GA. “He spent all day with me, taking me to various department heads, answering my questions, and giving me a guided tour of one of the largest and best run poured wall companies anywhere!”

Custom Concrete Inc specializes in complete foundation construction, from excavation thru backfill.  Carr employs approximately 220 people, while the subcontractors employ another hundred. Custom Concrete currently has 125 trucks, 20 pieces of equipment, and has seven affiliated companies.

The award was presented to Carr at the Awards luncheon during the Annual CFA Summer Meeting, July 17, 2004, at the Beaver Run Resort in Breckenridge, Co.

Other presentations at the luncheon include recognition of long-standing CFA members, and the winner of the coveted Basement of the Year Award.

About the Award
The Robert D. Sawyer Award is named on behalf of Bob Sawyer, the first CFA executive director, and it is presented to a contractor member whose contributions to the industry merit recognition. The award recognizes individuals who commit countless time and resources to serve the industry, as Bob Sawyer did for the CFA. Bob Sawyer passed away last year after a brief illness. His inspiration and leadership brought together a group of minds that are focused on improving the technology and practices in the poured wall industry.
