Jim Baty is currently Technical Director for both the Tilt-Up Concrete Association and Concrete
Foundations Association. Combined with his degree (BARCH) in Architecture from
Iowa State University, Mr. Baty has added a career long emphasis on thermal design efficiency.
He served ten years with Composite Technologies Corporation, Boone, IA Technical
Services Manager where he was responsible for the integration of thermal efficiency with
commercial construction through engineering, design consultation and construction supervision
as well as developing thermal design and engineering tools including isothermal
planes analysis programs and implementation programs demonstrating the benefits of
mass construction as referenced in ASHRAE 90.1. His research has involved the use of
thermal modeling programs for energy-efficient design such as VisualDOE, Physibel and
other mechanical engineering programs. Mr. Baty has also contributed to full-scale thermal
testing of insulated concrete sandwich panel constructions with the U.S. Department of
Energy (DOE) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
Baty continues to provide significant education to the industry on topics ranging from best
construction practices to cold weather concrete performance; energy performance guidelines
to architectural creativity and everything in between. His presentations have been
received at a variety of venues including World of Concrete; conventions for many state and
national associations; state code events as well as a consistent presence for architectural,
engineering, building inspector and code official regional events.
During his career Mr. Baty has been involved in or a member of The American Concrete Institute (ACI); American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers
(ASHRAE); Construction Specifications Institute (CSI); Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute
(PCI); Tilt Up Concrete Association (TCA) and Georgia/Carolina Precast/Prestressed Concrete
Institute (GCPCI). He has served on committees for PCI and ASHRAE and contributed to
the published State of the Art for Insulated Precast Sandwich Walls by the PCI. Currently,
Mr. Baty is serving as secretary for the ACI 332 and 551 committees as well as serving on
ACI 301, 306, 314, 533, C650 and TSC committees. He is also a certified Tilt-Up Technician
through ACI.
